Mesa Verde National Park
Seasonal Access & Weather
Seasonal Access
The park operates year-round, though seasonal closures affect access to certain cliff dwellings, trails, and roads. Summer (May through September) offers the fullest access, with ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours, open trails, and longer hours for visitor services. Fall brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, but some facilities begin to reduce hours.
Winter weather can bring snow and icy conditions, leading to the closure of the Wetherill Mesa Road and limited access to some sites. Spring sees gradual re-openings as weather permits. Visitors should always check current conditions and facility schedules before traveling, as operations vary with the season and weather.
Weather Considerations
Mesa Verde’s high desert and mountain environment means conditions can change quickly. Summer brings hot daytime temperatures, afternoon thunderstorms, and a risk of flash flooding or lightning strikes on open trails. Wildfire danger is elevated during dry periods, and fire restrictions may be in place.
Winter conditions can be harsh, with snow, ice, and occasional road closures, especially on higher elevations like Wetherill Mesa Road. Spring and fall weather are generally mild, but sudden storms, cold nights, and high winds are possible. Visitors should check forecasts, carry plenty of water, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions year-round.
