Your guide

Miguel

Native to the Sacred Valley, Peru

Miguel was born and raised in the Sacred Valley, the same stretch of land his ancestors farmed under the Inca empire. He has been leading tours in Cusco and Machu Picchu for over a decade and holds a professional guide license from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru.

He speaks English, Spanish, and Quechua. Quechua is the language of the Incas, spoken continuously in the Andes for over 500 years and still the first language of many communities throughout Peru and Bolivia. Miguel will share the customs and practices still alive in these communities, from the language you'll hear in the markets to the rituals that still honor Pachamama, mother earth.

He grew up in the Sacred Valley and has spent his life in this region. Expect a warm and friendly guide, stories you won't find in guidebooks, and a guide who's genuinely excited to share the place he calls home.

Arrival in Cusco

Arrival in Cusco

Today's Highlight

Land in the ancient Inca capital and ease into the altitude.

A driver meets you at Cusco airport and takes you to your hotel. Cusco sits at 11,150 ft, so the rest of the day is yours to rest, hydrate, and adjust. Grab coca tea, take a short walk around the Plaza de Armas if you feel up to it, and get an early night. You'll meet Miguel in the morning.

Day 2

Cusco City Tour

Cusco City Tour

Today's Highlight

Stand inside the Inca walls that still hold up colonial Cusco.

The tour runs 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM and covers five ancient sites. Start at Qoricancha, the Inca Temple of the Sun, where Spanish colonizers built the Convent of Santo Domingo directly on top of Inca foundations.

Next, climb to Sacsayhuamán, the hilltop fortress with stones weighing up to 125 tons, fitted so tightly you can't slide a knife between them.

From there, three smaller sites: Qenqo, a ritual complex carved into a single monolith, Puca Pucara, the red stone military outpost, and Tambomachay, the water temple where Inca aqueducts still run today.

The tour ends at the Plaza de Armas. Miguel will point you toward lunch spots and give you the afternoon back.

Day 3

Sacred Valley & Train to Aguas Calientes

Sacred Valley & Train to Aguas Calientes

Today's Highlight

Five stops across the Sacred Valley, ending with a scenic train ride through the Andes.

An early 6:30 AM start. You'll drop in altitude from Cusco into the Urubamba Valley, which is a relief on your body and a gift to the landscape.

First stop is a textile center where local weavers demonstrate natural dyeing and loom techniques. Next is Pisac, with its hillside Inca ruins and artisan market below. Then the Maras Salt Mines, 3,000 pink salt pans worked by hand since pre-Inca times, followed by Moray, the circular terraces the Incas used to test crops at different microclimates.

Buffet lunch in Urubamba, then on to Ollantaytambo, the massive hillside fortress where the Incas beat back the Spanish.

Board the train at Ollantaytambo for the 1 hour 45 minute ride along the Urubamba River canyon to Aguas Calientes. Check into your hotel at the base of Machu Picchu.

Day 4

Machu Picchu & Return to Cusco

Miguel leads a 2.5-hour guided walk through over 200 structures, including the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana stone, and the agricultural terraces that drop off into the cloud forest.

After the tour, take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes for lunch and some free time. The afternoon train returns you to Ollantaytambo, where a private driver transfers you to Cusco. You'll be back at your hotel around 8:00 PM.
