Best cenote for first-timers?
Gran Cenote near Tulum, perfect for a first one. Open-air, easy to swim, great for photos. Save Dos Ojos for day 2, it's incredible but you'll appreciate it more after the easier one.
Do we need water shoes?
For Gran Cenote yes, the rocks are sharp. Dos Ojos no, all swimming. Most resort gift shops carry them if you'd rather pack light, totally fine either way.
Sargassum, hitting your area?
April through August, yes. Your resort rakes daily and runs barriers, so the impact at the resort is usually small. I'll keep an eye on the sargassum tracker the week of your trip and flag anything that looks rough.
