Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge
Overview
Once a sprawling industrial complex, the land was cleaned up and set aside for wildlife and people. Today short and mixed grass prairie, cottonwood-lined creek bottoms, and prairie lakes support a wide range of native species.
You can watch bison graze, scan for eagles and waterfowl over open water, and explore easy paths that wind through grasslands and around lakes. Exhibits at the visitor center introduce the refuge story and its wildlife, and the auto tour links overlooks and trailheads so you can take in broad Front Range views without a long drive.
