Montrose
Overview
Montrose rests in the sunny Uncompahgre Valley where the river bends through cottonwoods and parkland and where paved paths link downtown blocks to the water in just a few minutes. To the east, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park reveals sheer dark walls and sweeping overlooks. To the north, Grand Mesa rises with cool forests and several lakes. To the west, Uncompahgre National Forest and Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area are open for year-round access. Clear days and dry air make the park system a year round playground.
Montrose positions visitors in the center of it all and invites them to stay in one place while they play everywhere.
The water sports park builds playful waves right in town and the amphitheater at Cerise Park hosts warm season concerts in a grassy bowl beside the river. Trails in the Baldridge and Riverbottom complex connect ballfields, playgrounds, fishing spots, and disc golf to the Uncompahgre Riverway Trail, so it's easy to explore by foot or bike. A community recreation center adds pools, a climbing wall, courts, fitness spaces, and an indoor track, which makes active days simple in any season. Visitor services at the downtown center provide maps, advice, and local tips so travelers can base here and range out to canyon rims, plateau forests, red rock valleys, and mountain towns.
