Lizard Head Wilderness
Regulations & Considerations
Park Rules
- No motorized or mechanized travel (no bikes, e-bikes, or drones) within designated wilderness.
- Group size: up to 15 people; combined people + stock ≤25.
- Camping setbacks: stay 100 ft from water; observe site-specific exceptions in Navajo Basin where designated sites exist.
- Campfires: no fires above treeline, within 100 ft of water or trails, and no fires in Navajo Basin. Use stoves in restricted zones.
- Dogs: keep under direct control to protect wildlife and fellow hikers’ experience.
Wildlife Cautions
Black bears are present on the surrounding national forests, so store food and scented items securely, keep a clean camp, and follow agency bear-safety guidance. Give wildlife space and never feed animals. Travel in small, well-managed groups, make noise where visibility is limited, and know how to respond to wildlife encounters. Follow all food-storage guidance posted by the Forest Service for the districts managing this wilderness.
Fire Restrictions
Campfires are prohibited within Navajo Basin by Forest Service special order. Elsewhere in the wilderness, follow current fire-danger postings and any temporary restrictions. If fires are allowed, use established fire rings where permitted outside the closed area, keep fires small, and fully extinguish with water until cold to the touch. Portable stoves are recommended for minimum impact, and visitors should verify any new restrictions before their trip with the Forest Service.
