Lizard Head Pass - Overlook & Rest Area
Top-of-the-pass access on CO-145 with ample parking and immediate trail connections. The Lizard Head Trail #505 and Cross Mountain Trail #512 start right by the overlook/rest area, making this the most convenient launch point for panoramic ridge walks and the popular Lizard Head–Cross Mountain loop.
Cross Mountain Trailhead
Large roadside trailhead approximately 2 miles south of Lizard Head Pass on CO-145. A steady forest climb leads to meadows and a junction with the Lizard Head Trail beneath the namesake spire, prime scenery for a half-day push or the full loop.
Kilpacker Basin Trailhead
This is the southern approach into alpine meadows, waterfalls, and the Kilpacker Basin route used to access El Diente Peak and Mount Wilson. Gravel approach off Dunton Road; no fee, no water. Popular with climbers and backpackers aiming for the Wilson Group.
Navajo Lake Trailhead
Situated further up the same high-clearance road as the Kilpacker Trailhead. This entry follows the West Dolores River valley and leads directly to Navajo Lake, the most popular basecamp for climbers attempting the three Fourteeners in the area (Mount Wilson, Wilson Peak, and El Diente Peak). Due to its popularity, this is often the busiest access point.
Woods Lake Trailhead (Woods Lake Recreation Area)
This trailhead, accessed via Forest Road 618, is further west near the Woods Lake Campground and State Wildlife Area. It provides access to the Woods Lake Trail (#406), , Elk Creek #407, and routes toward Navajo Basin, great wildflowers and mellow shoreline hiking with big Dolores Peak views.
