Grand Mesa National Forest
Regulations & Considerations
Park Rules
Grand Mesa rewards low-impact adventurers. Camp only where allowed, mind seasonal road designations, secure food and trash, and give wildlife plenty of space.
- Camping & stay limits: In GMUG campgrounds and dispersed areas, camping is limited to 14 days, with a required break before returning; extended occupancy limits across the forest also apply. This keeps sites available and landscapes healthy.
- Roads & motorized access: Some roads and routes open or close seasonally. Always check the current Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) before you drive or ride; it shows exactly which routes are open to what types of use.
- Know before you go: Road and site status change with weather and maintenance. Review the live Conditions page for updates before heading out.
- Food & attractants: From March 1 to November 30, food and refuse must be stored in approved ways (bear-resistant container; hung properly; secured in a closed vehicle or solid structure) to reduce wildlife conflicts.
Wildlife Cautions
Grand Mesa is prime habitat for black bears, moose, elk, mule deer, and raptors—a dream for viewing, as long as you keep it wild.
- Bears: Keep all food, coolers, trash, and scented items secured day and night using IGBC-certified containers, proper hangs, or locked vehicles, as required by the forest-wide food storage order (in effect each year Mar 1–Nov 30). Never leave food unattended.
- Moose & large mammals: Moose are well established on the Mesa and are often seen around lakes and wet meadows; enjoy them from a distance and give them a wide berth, especially cows with calves.
- General tips: Observe animals quietly, keep pets under control, and yield space. If an animal changes its behavior, you’re too close, step back and enjoy the view.
Fire Restrictions
Fire restrictions are adjusted according to weather and fuel conditions. Use fires only where allowed and keep flames small and attended. Many lakeside and backcountry areas limit open flames during dry periods. Gas stoves are the most reliable cooking option when restrictions are in place. Check current alerts for the latest stage restrictions before you go.
