Grand Mesa National Forest
Accessibility
Framed by hundreds of alpine lakes and a paved scenic byway that climbs to the top of the world’s largest flat-top mountain, Grand Mesa pairs wild beauty with practical access. The Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway (Hwy 65) is paved and peppered with scenic pullouts, so you can soak in the views straight from the car or with only a few steps. Notable roadside stops include observation sites along Highway 65 and wide pullouts that make sight-seeing simple.
For lakeside time with minimal effort, the forest highlights ADA-accessible fishing access with a fishing pier and boat launch on the Mesa. At Island Lake Boat Ramp, you’ll find a concrete ramp, a fish-cleaning station, and a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier, a smooth, direct way to reach the water. Sunset Lake also features a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier, giving anglers and sightseers an easy, lakeside vantage point.
If you’re looking for a short, paved stroll with a postcard payoff, the Land O’ Lakes Trail leads just ½ mile to a broad overlook above Island Lake; it’s described as family-friendly and wheelchair accessible, with fall color displays that light up the forest.
Picnicking is straightforward at the Mesa Lakes Picnic Area, which is noted as universally accessible with parking, tables, and a nearby loop around Mesa Lake. It’s an easy place to relax by the water without tackling long or uneven terrain.
Need amenities and trip help? The Grand Mesa Visitor Center (near Cedaredge) opens daily from Memorial Day weekend through the last Sunday in September for maps, passes, and staff guidance. Even during seasonal closures, restrooms at the visitor center remain available, and local tourism listings also note bathrooms on site, helpful for families and anyone planning accessible stops.
For effortless viewpoints while touring the byway, watch for signed observation sites and pullouts that provide space to park and look out over the valleys and lakes, great options when you want the scenery without a long hike.
