Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Seasonal Closures
Seasonal Closures
South Rim Road beyond Gunnison Point is closed to vehicles from mid-November through mid-April. The road is plowed only as far as Gunnison Point, leaving the rest open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The North Rim Road and North Rim Visitor Center are closed from late fall through mid-spring.
The East Portal Road also closes during winter due to steep grades and safety concerns. Campgrounds on both rims have seasonal operations, with the South Rim Campground open year-round but offering limited winter services.
Wildlife Closures
Certain areas of the park may be temporarily closed to protect nesting raptors and other sensitive species. These closures are usually in effect during the spring and early summer months when wildlife is most vulnerable. Signs are posted to indicate restricted access, and visitors are expected to respect these closures to support conservation efforts.
