Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
Seasonal Access & Weather
Seasonal Access
The park’s accessibility varies widely by season. The South Rim is open year-round, but the South Rim Road beyond Gunnison Point is typically closed to vehicles from late November through mid-April due to snow. During this period, the road is groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The North Rim Road and East Portal Road are usually closed from late fall through mid-spring as well, with access resuming once conditions allow in late April or May.
Weather Considerations
Weather can shift quickly. Summers bring hot, dry days with afternoon thunderstorms and lightning hazards, especially on exposed overlooks. Winters are cold with significant snowfall, restricting access and requiring proper preparation. Spring and fall offer cooler conditions but can still experience sudden storms. The park is located in a semi-arid climate, so wildfire risk is a concern during dry periods. Visitors should check daily forecasts and road status updates before traveling.
